AutoGain: Adapting Gain Functions by Optimizing Submovement Efficiency
نویسندگان
چکیده
A well-designed control-to-display (CD) gain function can improve pointing performance with an indirect pointing device such as a trackpad. However, the design of gain functions has been challenging and mostly based on trial and error. AutoGain is an unobtrusive method to obtain a gain function for an indirect pointing device in contexts where cursor trajectories can be tracked. It gradually improves pointing efficiency by using a novel submovement-level tracking+optimization technique. In a study, we show that AutoGain can produce gain functions with performance comparable to commercial designs in less than a half hour of active use. This is attributable to reductions in aiming error (undershooting/overshooting) for each submovement. Our second study shows that AutoGain can be used on emerging input devices (here, a Leap Motion controller) that do not have reference gain functions yet. Finally, we discuss deployment in a real interactive system.

Impedance modulation and feedback corrections in tracking targets of variable size and frequency.
Humans are able to adjust the accuracy of their movements to the demands posed by the task at hand. The variability in task execution caused by the inherent noisiness of the neuromuscular system can be tuned to task demands by both feedforward (e.g., impedance modulation) and feedback mechanisms. In this experiment, we studied both mechanisms, using mechanical perturbations to estimate stiffnes...
متن کاملEngineering Aspects of Hash Functions
Hash functions have numerous applications in cryptography, from public key to cryptographic protocols and cryptosystems. Evidently, substantial effort was invested on designing ”secure” hash functions, unintentionally overlooking other engineering aspects that may affect their use in practice. However, we argue that in some applications, the efficiency of hash functions is as important as their...

متن کاملCharacterization of Information-Based Learning Benefits with Submovement Dynamics and Muscular Rhythmicity
For skill advancement, motor variability must be optimized based on target information during practice sessions. This study investigated structural changes in kinematic variability by characterizing submovement dynamics and muscular oscillations after practice with visuomotor tracking under different target conditions. Thirty-six participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups (simpl...
متن کاملOptimizing Membership Functions using Learning Automata for Fuzzy Association Rule Mining
The Transactions in web data often consist of quantitative data, suggesting that fuzzy set theory can be used to represent such data. The time spent by users on each web page is one type of web data, was regarded as a trapezoidal membership function (TMF) and can be used to evaluate user browsing behavior. The quality of mining fuzzy association rules depends on membership functions and since t...
